We can profile and counsel individuals, select and develop teams and match people to jobs using the Belbin Interplace software.

The primary advantage of the Belbin Team Role System is that it clearly distinguishes between PERSONALITY and BEHAVIOUR. This is a critical element in team building that is often overlooked, because from a pragmatic business point of view our major concern is 'how a person behaves'.

This means that unlike many other systems, Belbin can be used throughout the entire career of each individual employee, while continuing to provide valuable management information well into the future.

Please consider the following questions:

  • Does your organisation put the right person in the right job, each and every time?
  • Do some (or even all) of your teams cause you problems. More to the point: do you know how to fix those problems?
  • Are your teams as creative as you would like?
  • Do you in fact have any teams at all? Or just a groups of people working individually?

Unfavourable answers to any of these questions almost inevitably result from people with behaviours/values/attitudes that do not match the demands of their job.

Some times it is because the people working together have different styles that do not mesh, or but more frequently it is simply because they misunderstand their role and what is expected of them. To put it simply, they are square pegs in round holes!

The solutions to these problems are:

  • Fast, accurate methods for identifying the right person for the job.
  • Fast accurate methods for forming teams that will work at high levels of efficiency.
  • Effective team-building and communications training.

These characteristics are illustrated in the following notes:

Recruiting ... The story (and often the bitter ending) starts with the recruitment or selection process, be it internal or external. Many recruitments place most emphases on experience, qualification and personal presentation (eligibility for the job). While paying little regard to the behavioural match of the person to the job or the impact that he or she is likely to have on existing team members (suitability for the job). Over reliance on eligibility frequently results in round pegs in square holes. The Belbin approach avoids this method.

Training ... The Belbin system can be used as the basis of all interpersonal skills training, Team development, sales, customer service and communication training. Even technical training can be improved because a knowledge of a group's individual team roles can ensure that syndicates are constructed for optimum learning efficiency.

Career Development ... No individual, in either a business or social sense, is truly effective until they understand the impact they have upon others and have a comprehensive understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. The personal feedback provided by this system facilitates those important insights.

Succession Planning ... In addition to personal profiling, the Belbin system allows individual jobs to be profiled. Therefore when a comprehensive profile of all jobs exists within an organisation, the software allows all 'best fit' jobs to be identified. This means that succession planning is made easier and quicker.

Restructuring ... Restructuring becomes much easier because accurate assessments of job roles and groups is possible. In a similar manner special purpose project teams can be quickly identified.

Out-placement ... Improved guidance can be provided with regard to appropriate strategies and direction that may prove beneficial to the individual.

Hidden Talent ... One of the most exciting aspects of the system is that when analysing the varying views of the individual in comparison to that of the observers. The individual often discovers that he or she has previously overlook talents. This is extremely beneficial to both the company and the individual in terms of productivity, employee motivation and career development.
